Quote of the Day: Explaining Obamacons
A reader at the Daily Dish has a perfect encapsulation of why I consider myself an Obamacon (well, maybe an Obamatarian):
I was with a woman this week who is in her sixties. She told me that she has voted Republican her entire life and this year she is voting for Obama. Her reason; John McCain is too erratic and too much of a hot head and Sarah Palin is completely unqualified. I think many "Obamacons" simply love this country more than they do their ideology.

Olbermann Special Comment: Pro- and Anti-America
I watched this Keith Olbermann Special Comment last night and it was spot-on. He rails against recent comments by Sarah Palin, nutjob Minnesota Republican Representative Michelle Bachmann and McCain hack surrogate Nancy Pfotenhauer to the effect that the areas of the country that support McCain and the Republicans are "pro-America" and the "real America", while areas and people that support Obama are "anti-America":

Paying Taxes During Wartime Is Patriotic
As I've pointed out before, Bush's tax cuts earlier this decade were the first time in American history that the American government cut taxes in a time of war. Let me repeat, tax cuts during wartime never happened before in our history.
So, when you hear about Joe Biden out there on the stump talking about how it is the patriotic thing to do to reset tax rates for those making over $250,000 to the levels they were before the highly irresponsible Bush tax cuts, bear this in mind:[T]he idea that paying more taxes during war is an act of patriotism has quite a long and distinguished history in this country. During the Civil War, Representative Thaddeus Stevens--then chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee--said that "the annihilation of this government is the alternative" to increased taxation. To finance World War II, FDR actually proposed a tax that would have effectively capped incomes at $25,000 (or about $300,000 in today's dollars).

John Kerry Eviscerates McCain - Video
I'm listening to John Kerry deliver a series of razor-sharp jabs into the side of John McCain on C-SPAN. It's too bad that the usual suspects aren't carrying the speech. you really need to watch it. I'll post the video in an update once it's up.
One great quote among many: "Sometimes patriotism demands that you tell truth to power."
Andrew Sullivan was impressed too:
Was I hallucinating or was that not a stirring, passionate, acerbic and moving speech? Kerry expressed the rage so many of us feel when contemplating not just the failures of the last eight years but the chutzpah, contempt and arrogance that have accompanied them. And he went after McCain's betrayal of the very virtues he still lays claim to.
This convention has turned. The roll-call vote, the Clinton speech and now Kerry have ramped this up. Game on.

Obama Slams McCain for Questioning His Patriotism
Even though McCain pledged early on in the process that he would not question Barack Obama's patriotism, McCain gave a shameful speech at the Veterans of Foreign Wars and accused Obama of wanting the U.S. to "fail" in Iraq because of his "ambition" to be President.
Well, Obama unloaded with both barrels today in response. Good for him.
“[W]e do have differences in this election. But one of the things that we have to change in this country is the idea that people can’t disagree without challenging each other’s character and patriotism. I have never suggested that Senator McCain picks his positions on national security based on politics or personal ambition. I have not suggested it because I believe that he genuinely wants to serve America’s national interest. Now, it’s time for him to acknowledge that I want to do the same.
“Let me be clear: I will let no one question my love of this country. I love America, so do you, and so does John McCain. When I look out at this audience, I see people of different political views. You are Democrats and Republicans and Independents. But you all served together, and fought together, and bled together under the same proud flag. You did not serve a Red America or a Blue America — you served the United States of America.
“So let’s have a serious debate, and let’s debate our disagreements on the merits of policy — not personal attacks. And no matter how heated it gets or what kind of campaign he chooses to run, I will honor Senator McCain’s service, just like I honor the service of every veteran in this room, and every American who has worn the uniform of the United States.”

Laura Bush Defends Michelle Obama's Patriotism
So, guess what rabid, left-wing crackpot jumped to Michelle Obama's defense today?
That's right, First Lady Laura Bush:
Michelle Obama has a new defender from those who say she isn’t patriotic enough — First Lady Laura Bush. In an interview with ABC News, Bush said that Obama’s February remark that she was proud of the United States “for the first time in my adult life” was misconstrued.Thank you, Mrs. Bush. Your sanity on this issue is greatly appreciated.
“I think she probably meant ‘I’m more proud.’ That’s what she really meant,” Bush said from Afghanistan.
“You have to be really careful in what you say because everything you say is looked at and in many cases misconstrued,” she said.

Obama on Patriotism
This is a really amazing quote from an Obama speech in Montana. Anyone who questions Obama's patriotism because of some silliness over not wearing a flag pin must really not be playing with a full deck:
I love this country not because it's perfect, but because we've always been able to move it closer to perfection. Because through revolution and slavery; war and depression; great battles for civil rights and women's rights and worker's rights, generations of Americans have shown their love of country by struggling and sacrificing and risking their lives to bring us that much closer to our founding promise. And as long as I live, I will never forget that I am only standing here because they did... That is the country I love. That is the promise of America.

McCain Appears Without Flag Pin
Sure, this is an extraordinarily silly issue but since the Republicans are dedicated to pointing out how Obama fails to wear an American flag pin, here you go.

On a day Karl Rove's interview attacking Obama's disdain for flag pins appears, McCain appears pinless (if surrounded by flags).
In the old days, Rove wouldn't have let that happen.
McCain sometimes wears the pin, but not always. "His record of service to his country shows his dedication," spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said last year.
