Georgia "First Serious Crisis" Since Cold War

This is absolutely, unequivocally and indefensibly wrong, inflammatory and shameful. In statements yesterday, McCain actually said this:

My friends, we have reached a crisis, the first probably serious crisis internationally since the end of the Cold War. This is an act of aggression.

Are you absolutely out of your f*cking mind, Sen McCain? Are you that daft or are you just losing your marbles?

As Andrew Sullivan puts it:

Not the invasion of Kuwait?

Or the first Gulf War?

Or the Afghan war?

Or the second Iraq war?

Or Darfur?

Or Bosnia?

Or 9/11?

It's this kind of emotional hyperbole that should worry people about McCain in the White House. He's a drama queen on these issues. With a finger on the trigger.

Update: Here is an abridged litany of other foreign policy nonsense from McCain over the last few months, courtesy of the Jed Report:

* McCain believes Iraq and Pakistan share a border.

* McCain continues to believe Czechoslovakia is still a country.

* McCain has been confused about the difference between Sudan and Somalia.

* McCain has been confused about whether he wants more U.S. troops in Afghanistan, more NATO troops in Afghanistan, or both.

* McCain has been confused about how many U.S. troops are in Iraq.

* McCain has been confused about whether the U.S. can maintain a long-term presence in Iraq.

* McCain has been confused about the source of violence in Iraq.

* McCain has been confused about Iran’s relationship with al Qaeda.

* McCain has been confused about the difference between Sunni and Shi’ia.

* McCain has been confused about Gen. Petraeus’ responsibilities in Iraq.

* McCain has been confused about what transpired during the Maliki government’s recent offensive in Basra.

* McCain has been confused about Gen. Petraeus’ ability to travel around Baghdad “in a non-armed Humvee.”

* McCain has been so confused about Iraq, in November 2006, he couldn’t even do a live interview about the war without reading prepared notes on national television.

* McCain has been confused about his vote on the Kyl-Lieberman amendment on the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

* McCain, following a trip to Germany, referred to “President Putin of Germany.”

And remember, this only covers McCain’s obvious incoherence on his signature issue.

Wisdom from President Eisenhower for Today

Andrew Sullivan notes this poignant quote from President Dwight Eisenhower (of course, just a raving hippie peacenik):

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. ... We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together." Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1961

Now I can more clearly see why his granddaughter, lifelong Republican Susan Eisenhower, endorsed Obama back in February:

Forty-seven years ago, my grandfather Dwight D. Eisenhower bid farewell to a nation he had served for more than five decades. In his televised address, Ike famously coined the term "military-industrial complex," and he offered advice that is still relevant today. "As we peer into society's future," he said, we "must avoid the impulse to live only for today, plundering, for our own ease and convenience, the precious resources of tomorrow. We cannot mortgage the material assets of our grandchildren without risking the loss also of their political and spiritual heritage. We want democracy to survive for all generations to come, not to become the insolvent phantom of tomorrow."

This is one of the better grassroots Obama videos I've seen. I especially like the bits of Barack and Hillary training together. Great stuff:

Obama Camp Responds to New Smear Book

Ooh, snap! The Obama camp just released a scathing 40-page PDF rebuke to the lies, smears and innuendo peddled by right-wing nutjob and unashamed bigot Jerome Corsi in his new book.

Here's USA Today's summary:

The pdf, called Unfit for Publication, devotes 29 pages to rebutting Corsi's "lies," three pages to his "widely discredited beliefs," two pages to evidence he is a bigot and two pages to the "offensive language" in the book.

Here is Obama's second Olympic ad spot, which is pleasant and entirely positive. Talk about a contrast with the dreck that McCain has been putting on the air.
