Joe the Plumber Acknowledges Obama Tax Savings

McCain really should have thought the whole "Joe the Plumber" gambit through.

Master Plumber, who turned out to be a right-wing Republican all along, has now acknowledged that Barack Obama's tax plan would result in more tax savings for him and his family:

So today, Joe, who said he makes much less than $250,000, reluctantly admitted Obama would lower his taxes.

“I would, if you believe him, I would be receiving his tax cuts,” Wurzelbacher said.

Obama Ad: McCain Will Tax Your Health Insurance Premiums

Here is a new ad from the Obama campaign highlighting what McCain doesn't want you to know. As Joe Biden pointed out last night in the debate, McCain is proposing to tax (for the first time in American history) your employer-provided health insurance premiums:

On Health Care, Obama's Plan is Clearly Better

The Commonwealth Fund recently undertook a study of Obama's health care plan and McCain's laughable tax increase health care tax credit proposal. The results weren't even close:

An analysis of the two starkly different approaches to reforming the U.S. health care system offered by John McCain and Barack Obama suggests Obama's plan has the best chance of making health care more affordable, accessible, efficient and higher in quality.

The report, released on Thursday by the Commonwealth Fund, sized up the presidential candidates' plans for dealing with a health care system which has left nearly 46 million people uninsured and many more underinsured.

According to the report, Democrat Obama's plan would cover 34 million of the nation's projected 67 million uninsured people in 10 years, compared with just 2 million covered under Republican John McCain's plan.

Paying Taxes During Wartime Is Patriotic

As I've pointed out before, Bush's tax cuts earlier this decade were the first time in American history that the American government cut taxes in a time of war. Let me repeat, tax cuts during wartime never happened before in our history.

So, when you hear about Joe Biden out there on the stump talking about how it is the patriotic thing to do to reset tax rates for those making over $250,000 to the levels they were before the highly irresponsible Bush tax cuts, bear this in mind:

[T]he idea that paying more taxes during war is an act of patriotism has quite a long and distinguished history in this country. During the Civil War, Representative Thaddeus Stevens--then chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee--said that "the annihilation of this government is the alternative" to increased taxation. To finance World War II, FDR actually proposed a tax that would have effectively capped incomes at $25,000 (or about $300,000 in today's dollars).

Check out the patriotism of taxes in this Donald Duck cartoon from WWII:

Graph Shows Middle Income Tax Savings

This graph from a NY Time blog post pretty much says it all (click to enlarge). The bars to the left and right of a candidate show tax savings or increases, respectively, for a taxpayer making a certain amount of annual income:

Even Fox News Calling John McCain a Liar

Hmm, methinks there are whispers in the air that the "John McCain is a Lying Liar" meme is taking hold. How else could you explain this Faux News host ripping into McCain spokesperson Tucker Bounds for lying about Obama's tax plan?

McCain's McContradictions

There is a scathing new article up on the conservative New Republic that unloads on John McCain for his contradictory promises over the last week. It's a must-read.

John McCain's fantastical pledge on Monday to balance the budget by 2013 through massive tax cuts and unidentified budget reductions deserved the bad reviews it received. But the most unfortunate element of his incoherent promise is that it's representative of his policy agenda these days.

While the McCain campaign is trying to paint Barack Obama as a flip-flopper, the Arizona Republican is making diametrically opposed policy promises to different audiences at the same time. The contradictions are often in the details, but their obscurity is evidence of the campaign's cynicism.

Obama's Tax Plan - Now with Facts!

If I listen to one more McCain surrogate sit on television and LIE about Obama's tax plan, I may have to buy a new TV after what I do to it in a fit of rage.

Here's some of the basic facts (for those of you who still care about such things) of Obama's plan vs. McSame's, according to the non-partisan Tax Policy Center:

Obama raises taxes on families with incomes above $250,000, and only on those families. [Period. Full Stop.]

...

Obama's middle-class tax cut, about $1,000, is three times that of McCain's, about $300. Obama cuts the taxes of 81 percent of families; McCain, 56 percent.

...

McCain amps up the Bush tradition of saving the biggest tax cuts for the wealthiest families. That top 0.1% group gets a $270,000 tax cut under his plan.
