Quote of the Day 2

Here's a quote from a reader at The Daily Dish that sums up one of my biggest concerns about seating Michigan and Florida:

I am Floridian, and was told from the beginning that "my state would not count." For that reason, I stayed home ... to now "count" the Fl vote would disenfranchise me even more than if Fl were not to count at all. To the DNC & Howard Dean: I played by your rules, decided that you were telling me the truth when you said Fl votes would not count so I stayed home. Now, you're going to count it? Well, screw you.

How many tens of thousands of people (like this person) decided to stay home and not vote because they were told their votes wouldn't count?

Petition FedExed to the DNC

Here's the cover letter I attached to the 400+ page petition I just sent off to the DNC.

Democratic National Committee
Attn: Governor Howard Dean and
the Members of the Rules and Bylaws Committee
430 South Capitol Street SE
Washington, D.C. 20003

RE: Michigan and Florida Delegate Controversy

Dear Governor Dean and Members of the Rules and Bylaws Committee:

Beginning in early February, I started a petition to urge Senator Hillary Clinton and the DNC to not seat the Michigan and Florida delegations in the proportion allotted by each state's primary elections. I, and the over 4,500 signatories to the petition, agree with the DNC that it was unfair for both states to move up their primaries and believe that to change the rules in mid-stream would be highly unfair to the candidates and the thousands of people in each state who did not vote because they believed their votes would not count.

The petition has garnered a huge response, with over 4,500 people from all over our great country signing the petition and providing their own narrative view of why they oppose changing the rules at this stage in the game. As you’ll note, the attached petition runs to nearly 400 pages.

I hope you will review and consider our petition and the words of the thousands of people who signed it. We humbly believe that it is important for the DNC to consider the opinions of the everyday Americans who took the time out of their busy lives to both sign the petition and write down their personal views about this profoundly important decision.

Thank you very much for your time and attention to this matter. We look forward to a strong Democratic victory in November!

My Email to the DNC re: MI and FL

Dear [X],

I spoke with a representative at DNC headquarters today and she suggested you as the point of contact for a petition I have been circulating over the last few months.

Beginning in early February, I started a petition to urge Senator Hillary Clinton and the DNC to not seat the Michigan and Florida delegations in the proportion allotted by each state's primary elections. We agree with the DNC that it was unfair for both states to move up their primaries and believe that to change the rules in mid-stream would be highly unfair to the candidates and the thousands of people in each state who did not vote because they believed their votes would not count.

The petition has garnered a huge response, with over 4,500 people from all over our great country signing the petition and providing their own narrative view of why they oppose changing the rules at this stage in the game. Including each signer's commentary, the attached petition, when printed, runs to nearly 400 pages.

I hope you will consider forwarding this petition on to Governor Dean and the Rules & Bylaws Committee. I think it is important for the DNC to consider the opinions of the thousands of everyday Americans who took the time to both sign the petition and write down their personal views about this important decision.

Thank you very much for your time and attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

4,500+ Signatures Against Seating MI/FL Off to DNC

Thanks to everyone that made the petition I started to stop Hillary Clinton from stealing the nomination by seating the Florida and Michigan delegations a roaring success. Only by word of mouth, and without any kind of mainstream exposure whatsoever, the petition has garnered over 4,500 signatures from people all across this great country of ours in a few short months.

Now that the time is upon us, I am printing out the 400 pages that all of these intrepid signers (and their commentary) take up and am sending them out in a package to Howard Dean, the DNC, and the Rules and Bylaws Committee of the DNC.

If you haven't signed the petition, do so NOW! I will send off an addendum next week with everyone that signs in the next 7 or so days.

Make your voice heard! Don't let Hillary Clinton bludgeon her way to some measure of power in this race! Down with the Washington politics of the last 16+ years!

If you want to see the 400-page petition, with the commentary of 4,500 signers across our great land, click here.

If you want to do a bit of data dissection on where everyone comes from and the comments they left, check out the .CSV file by clicking here.

Clinton Compares MI, FL Votes to Zimbabwe

This woman really has gone off the deep end. She is now comparing the situation with Michigan and Florida's delegates (that she freaking supported just a few short months ago) with the recent election-rigging in Zimbabwe. Seriously. It's times like this I wish a party elder like Al Gore had a super power like a freeze beam with which to shut her down immediately.

Desperate to get attention for her cause to seat Florida and Michigan delegates, Hillary Clinton compared the plight of Zimbabweans in their recent fraudulent election to the uncounted votes of Michigan and Florida voters saying it is wrong when “people go through the motions of an election only to have them discarded and disregarded.”

“We’re seeing that right now in Zimbabwe," Clinton explained. "Tragically, an election was held, the president lost, they refused to abide by the will of the people,” Clinton told the crowd of senior citizens at a retirement community in south Florida.

“So we can never take for granted our precious right to vote. It is the single most important, privilege and right any of us have, because in that ballot box we are all equal. You’re equal to a billionaire. You’re equal to the president, every single one of us.”

Quote of the Day

Terry McAuliffe, Clinton's normally on-message surrogate admitted yesterday that Obama will win the swing states of Ohio and Florida. So why is Hillary still in this thing?

Clinton’s most on-message talking head brings up his boss’s strength in Florida and Ohio before saying, "If Sen. Obama's the nominee, can we win these states? Of course."

Fact Check: Clinton Behind Even With MI and FL

A particularly troubling and inaccurate meme on the Tubes these days among Hillary Clinton supporters is that somehow if Hillary Clinton were to get the Michigan and Florida delegations seated in the proportions she won in both states, she would magically become the front-runner.

Take for instance:

"[I'm] thinking about how FL/MI will be seated and counted, and the implications of that (Sen. Clinton being the frontrunner again)." on MyDD by SevenStrings

THE FACTS

Assumptions: For the sake of argument, let's assume the most likely of the unlikely scenarios:

(1) the Florida delegation is seated exactly as-is, according to the vote in Florida where no one was allowed to campaign; and

(2) the Michigan delegations are seated with Clinton getting the percentage that she received, in an election where only she left her name on the ballot, and Obama gets the delegates for the "uncommitted" votes.

POPULAR VOTE

Here are the popular vote numbers* from RealClearPolitics:

Popular Vote (w/o MI/FL):
Obama: 13,689,293
Clinton: 12,861,985
Spread: Obama +827,308
Popular Vote (w MI/FL):
Obama: 14,503,675
Clinton: 14,061,280
Spread: Obama +442,395

As you can see, even if MI and FL are included, Obama is still the frontrunner in the popular vote by more than 400,000 votes.

STATES WON

This is pretty simple, if MI and FL are counted, Clinton only picks up two states to add to her tally, bringing her from 13 to 15 (if you accept the notion that she "won" Texas and Nevada even though Obama received 3 and 1 more delegates, respectively.

This is compared to Obama's 29 states won.

DELEGATES

Here are the pledged delegate numbers from RealClearPolitics:

Pledged Delegates (w/o MI/FL):
Obama: 1,415
Clinton: 1,251
Spread: Obama +164
Pledged Delegates (w MI/FL) !* (w/ MI uncommitted for Obama):
Obama: 1,537
Clinton: 1,429
Spread: Obama +108
Pledged Delegates (w MI/FL) !* (w/o MI uncommitted for Obama):
Obama: 1,482
Clinton: 1,429
Spread: Obama +53

As you can see from the above, depending on whether or not the MI uncommitteds are pledged to Obama, Obama is still head by either 53 or 108 pledged delegates.

CONCLUSION AND PLEA

As the above analysis shows, Obama will still be ahead in pledged delegates, popular vote and states won even if FL and MI are seated as described above.

As a result, can I make a personal plea to Hillary supporters to simply debate on the facts and stop making the inaccurate claim that MI and FL would somehow magically make Sen. Clinton the "frontrunner"?

Notes:

* Includes estimated numbers from IA, NV, ME, WA, which did not release official numbers. The estimate from these four Caucus states where there are not official popular vote numbers only increases Senator Obama's popular vote margin by 110,224. As a result, the results of the analysis above do not change.

!* In Michigan, Clinton would get 73 pledged delegates and "Uncommitted" would receive 55. In Florida, Obama would get 67 pledged delegates and Clinton would get 105.

Two Peninsulas - A Song for Hillary's FL/MI Power Grab

Go over to the Huffington Post to listen to a new punk rock song dedicated to speaking out against Hillary's power grab for the Michigan and Florida delegates. Here's my favorite line:

Cause we've grown, old and tired
Of willful disregard for the rules
So it's high time I object
To ambition left unchecked
You've got so much more than my respect to lose.

The post also links to the petition urging Hillary to abandon her push to have the Michigan and Florida delegates seated in the upcoming Democratic National Convention. If you haven't already signed, please do so today!

Petition to Stop Clinton At 134 Signatures in 24 Hours!

As some of you have seen, I have started up a petition to urge Senator Clinton to stop her push to have the Florida and Michigan delegates seated (which would obviously, given the non-contested results, favor her). Please consider signing the petition and forwarding it to all of your family and friends!

Here are some of the comments to the petition thus far from people who have signed:

Moana - Hillary said, after the Iowa caucuses, that "Florida and Michigan don't count for anything". Now she is holding rallies in Florida and declaring "victory". You can't change the rules in the middle of the game, and her tactics do nothing but show her true character - she'll do anything to win, even if it means splitting the party in half...

Sara - Senator Clinton, As a young feminist, I am more than thrilled that so early in my voting career, I could help elect the first woman to the Oval Office. However, I would be ashamed to see her get there by dirty, underhanded tactics, which is precisely what you would be proposing if you carry this plan through. If you do carry out this plan, rest assured it will be at the expense of my vote, and many others'. I look to you for inspiration, Sara...

Lisa - While I am still very angry at the DNC for stripping Florida and Michigan of its delegates, it would be completely unfair to seat the delegates for Clinton at this point. Also, to set the record straight--I don't know about the situation in Michigan, but it was our REPUBLICAN legislature here is Florida that forced through the early primary date. Shame on the DNC for allowign this to happen, and SHAME ON YOU FELLOW DEMOCRATS who say that we in Florida and Michigan 'deserve' this!! Aren't we all supposed to be on one team?? Hillary Clinton and fellow democrats should have stood up for their Michigan and Florida constituents months ago. Too late now.

Go here to sign the petition!
Send the petition to your friends and family!

Clinton: Much Ado About No Delegates

I try to keep this blog positive where possible but Hillary's attempt to subvert the nominating process is absolutely infuriating for its underhandedness and sheer mendacity. Here is a great article from the Washington Post that shows her "victory" in Florida's no-delegate primary for what it is (i.e., a victory only if you choose to spin it as such):

Cheering supporters? Check. Election returns on the projection screen? Check. Andrea Mitchell and Candy Crowley doing stand-ups? Check and check.

In a political stunt worthy of the late Evel Knievel, the Clinton campaign decided to put on an ersatz victory party that, it hoped, would erase memories of Obama's actual victory Saturday night in South Carolina's Democratic primary. "Thank you, Florida Democrats!" Clinton shouted to the cheering throng. "I am thrilled to have this vote of confidence."

It was a perfect reproduction of an actual victory speech, delivered at a perfectly ersatz celebration at a perfectly pretend location: a faux Italianate palace with lion sculptures, indoor fountains and a commanding view of Interstate 595.

"Thank you, thank you for this tremendous victory tonight," Clinton shouted.

Well, at least a tremendous victory party.

Clinton Breaks Pledge; Heads to Florida

I always thought she'd be a bit more subtle than this but Hillary Clinton today affirmatively broke her word and went back on her pledge (signed together with every other Democrat), not to actively campaign in Florida because of Florida's decision to move up its primary.

I don't see how anyone doesn't realize that she is a liar and will do and say anything to get elected. What is she going to do in office when she agrees to a treaty with Country X only to later go back on her word when County Y objects?

Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton said Sunday she will go to Florida to assure Democrats that “their voices are heard” and to underscore her commitment to seeing the state’s delegation seated at the national convention.
